A Resilient Love Story

What happens when friendship catches fire?

Former Marine and lower-leg amputee Carey Everett keeps a grueling schedule of counseling fellow war veterans and their families. The injury he received in Afghanistan forces him to rely on a reserve of strength he didn’t even know he had. A much deserved vacation will let him reconnect with his best friend, who saved his life and has been there for him through devastating injury and painful recovery.

Part-time EMT and aspiring singer Jase DeSantis has been in love with Carey for years, but he’s come to accept that his straight friend will never be able to offer more. Jase fills his days with band rehearsals, ambulance shifts, and willing groupies, all while trying to cope with debilitating PTSD.

A week of sun, fun, and music in San Diego changes Jase and Carey’s lives forever when their relationship takes an unexpected turn. Jase has been longing for that change, but it leaves Carey reeling with confusion. As Jase fights to hold things together, Carey deals with doubts, fears, and his own preconceived notions about labels and the true nature of love.

"In war, there are no unwounded soldiers, Jase."

MY FIRST 5 STAR OF THE YEAR!!

Yes, yes I am yelling.

This is my first Melanie Hansen book and it 100% most certainly WILL NOT be my last. The writing here was fantastic. It flowed effortlessy, it sucked you in from the beginning and it held you prisoner until the very last page.

One thing I have to touch on and applaud is that the author tackled a very difficult subject with honesty, care and respect. Writing about the life-altering realities of war is a very sensitive subject matter. This was vividly believable and raw. You felt the pain right alongside the characters as they looked back at their time serving in Afghanistan.

The emotion will grip you from the beginning. The flashbacks are difficult to read, but so vital to understanding these men....both individually and as the foundation to their friendship.

The evolution of their romantic relationship was believable and very well written. Jase's love for Carey was a living breathing thing....a current of emotion constantly zipping through his body whenever they were together. As a reader, you felt that yearning....and in the beginning, that unrequited desire.

Carey's struggle with his feelings for Jase was understandable. He was apprehensive and confused. He knew he loved him, cared for him....but he just couldn't get his mind to wrap around the depth of love he had for his best friend. Could he truly be in love with a man?

Their connection was palpable. The sex here, in addition to being incredibly hot, was intense yet unbelievably intimate. Jase and Carey were soul mates on a much deeper level...something that transcended far deeper than their physical connection.

GAH I can't recommend this book enough!

Why I've waited so long to read this, I have no idea?!? I think it just got lost in my never-ending TBR pile or maybe I was apprehensive since this was a debut.....yes, A DEBUT people!

I urge you...DO NOT make the same mistake I did...pick up this book and read it.

Everything Changes Resilient Love edition by Melanie Hansen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I want to congratulate this new author on her book, 'Everything Changes'. The way she made her characters come alive, the steady development of the story, and the flashbacks that were in just the right places to make this one of the best books I've read recently in this genre.
Everything the author described was true to life, the results of becoming an amputee, the PTSD of both Jase and Carey, and the way their love evolved felt so right.
Good luck with the next novel, Melanie, I will be looking for it avidly.
I read so that I may be entertained and this book was more sweet than entertaining. This was a story about 2 friends Jase and Carey. Jase is inlove with Carey and has been for a while. When Carey got injured in Afghanistan Jase was there to nurse and take care of him. Carey is grateful to Jase and feels that his life would be incomplete without Jase. Then while on vacation, situation changes and now Carey must decide if his gratefulness and love for his friend can be more. I liked both character but Jase sounded just so sweet and adorable. This was book served it's purpose of entertaining me.
All in all, this book didn't resonate with me. I was furious with Carey for hurting Jase the way he did, and I honestly wish Jase had made him suffer a bit more before bestowing forgiveness. They hardly talked for months after Carey went back to Colorado! Carey didn't grovel nearly enough, and that made the entire book fall flat on its face. However, I think this author has improved immensely, because I loved "Point of Contact".
First to address what a couple of other reviewers wrote EMT's regularly carry emergency kits in their personal vehicles because they are First Responders and will act as such in an emergency, such as the car crash in the book. This isn't stealing! They ask and sign for such supplies as necessary. As a qualified Combat Medic, Jase may have had more latitude in carrying additional drugs. As far as being a "drug user", as one reviewer called him, he smoked a joint twice, only after PTSD episodes and medical marijuana is used for that purpose and is legal in CA. Please apply some common sense and employ reading comprehension skills. Uninformed reviews really tick me off. Google is your friend people!

My rant is now over.

The was an excellent story and appeared to be pretty accurate in its depictions of war and the effects on military personnel. I didn't mind the flashbacks, they were not excessive and were appropriately placed. The history of their relationship was important to the storyline. I also think the reactions of he characters to their situation was as realistic as it could be. No author could predict how any two people would feel in the same situation but her visualization was excellent. They had mature conversations and communicated their expectations to each other. I think their reactions were all appropriate to the characters that were drawn. I connected with each character and was able to feel the emotion and wasn't distracted by unnecessary detail or dialogue. For me, this is the sign of a good story.
I couldn’t get into the story because the characters just didn’t have any depth to me, best friends attracted to each other, Jase more comfortable in his skin that he finds men and women attractive and Carey who finds Jase attractive but can’t deal. It’s a cliche and while I don’t mind books with that subject matter, the just didn’t seem to mesh well in my opinion. And the flashbacks, while I know it adds to the tale, I found it annoying, have the character discuss the past, flashbacks are just not needed. Overall, just okay and kinda annoyed I paid $6 for it, cause it definitely wasn’t worth it.
